Chiarian Dies; His Kidney Saves His Mother's Life

Wed, 08/21/2013

Ryan McGee passed away unexpectedly from Chiari malformation on Aug. 11. He was 20 years old.

McGee was a huge advocate for organ donation and it saved his mother's life. His mother, Zona McGee, had been suffering from kidney disease for more than 20 years. It turned out that after Ryan died he was a match for Zona and she received the life-saving transplant the day after his death.

"She is now doing well and in recovery," said Crystal Bowron, who is Ryan's sister and Zona's daughter. "During the three months that my brother was sick, my dad lost his business and my mom was forced to move in with my husband and I after losing their townhome. Due to the unexpected nature of these events, there was nothing set aside for funeral costs, etc. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! All money past family expenses will go to the Donate Life Foundation."

The visitation with the family will take place today. Please feel free to drop by and pay your respects between noon and 8 p.m. at Sellars Funeral Home at 2250 N. Mt. Juliet Rd. in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. The funeral home's telephone number is (615) 758-5459.

His funeral will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m.
