Back from Brain Surgery, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Drummer Reflects on Career-Threatening Scare

Mon, 05/11/2015

Leah Shapiro isn't the original drummer of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but she is as integral to their sound as any member.

As the band was preparing to tour again last October, Shapiro began to suffer from debilitating headaches, extreme dizziness, insomnia and aches and pains. She also found it nearly impossible to play the drums.

Tests revealed that Shapiro has Chiari. She was scheduled for surgery and told that she would be facing months of recovery. There was also no guarantee that her drumming skills would return to where they were before her health began to suffer.

Fortunately, Shapiro made it through the surgery just fine and is recovering well. To make things more interesting, her surgeon happened to be a big fan of the band.

Editor's Note: The article makes an error in calling Chiari "extremely rare." There are roughly 300,000 people diagnosed with Chiari in the United States and the serious neurological disorder is seen all over the world.
