Every Friday, the ICA Newsroom posts an article to a series called "SOME CHIARIANS ALSO HAVE ... " Today, we look at syringomyelia:

SYRINGOMYELIA (sear-IN-go-my-EEL-ya) 


In 20-30% of the cases of those diagnosed with Chiari I malformation, the sufferer also has syringomyelia. This happens when a fluid-filled cyst forms within the spinal cord. Syringomyelia may also occur as a complication of spine trauma, meningitis, hemorrhage, a tumor or arachnoiditis.

Paul and Jennifer Silva had been struggling with multiple doctor visits, tests and unanswered questions about their nine-year-old daughter Ella. It wasn’t until a chance encounter that lead them to finding what and who they were looking for.

The “who” they found was Dr. Holly Gilmer, medical director of pediatric neurosurgery at Beaumont Children’s Hospital, and the “what” was Chiari malformation.

Dear readers,

It has been another busy and successful week for the International Chiari Association (ICA).

It started with the unveiling of the ICA Chiari Awareness Bracelets. These purple bracelets feature ICA Mascot Courage the Bear. They are made of soft, durable neoprene material for long-lasting comfort.

The bracelets are the first of many Chiari-friendly items that will become available this year. Some of them will feature Courage, who is a favorite of all ages.

An eChapter allows people that live far apart to communicate with each other via e-mail.

Most people take their hearing for granted, but you'll never find Claire Maloney in that group. The 14-year-old girl from Chicago has Chiari and her particular battle is the second reported case in the world.

At the age of four, Claire learned that she was born with mild to moderate hearing loss. Doctors didn't know what was causing this, but Claire would have to see an audiologist every eight months to make sure that she didn't lose any more of her hearing.
